We learned new details this weekend about a $92-million improvement project planned by Kraft-Heinz at their hot dog plant on Columbia’s Waco road.

Boone County commissioners and other local governments have approved a property tax abatement for the project, essentially on new equipment that Kraft Heinz would be purchasing for the project. Boone County presiding commissioner Kip Kendrick tells 939 the Eagle’s “CEO Roundtable” program that Boone County and Columbia don’t want to lose the plant, which has hundreds of jobs.

“They have right around 450 full-time employees. I think it’s 447 is their census count currently of employees. And you know $48,000 annually average wage. And these are important positions, they provide important jobs to families across Boone County,” Commissioner Kendrick tells listeners.

The Kraft Heinz plant on Columbia’s Waco road is the only plant in North America that makes Oscar Mayer hot dogs. Kraft Heinz is located on Columbia’s busy food corridor along and near Route B, which also includes Swift Foods and Nabisco.

You can hear host Fred Parry’s full interview with Commissioner Kendrick here.
