Veteran Boone County Sheriff Dwayne Carey will win a sixth term in office.

Sheriff Carey, who was elected in 2004 and has worked for the sheriff’s department for 35 years, is beating former deputy Charles Blair in today’s Democratic primary by a vote of 5,281 to 1,120. There is no Boone County GOP sheriff candidate, so Carey will be unopposed in the November election.

Some consider Sheriff Carey to be Boone County’s most popular elected official. He notes the Boone County Sheriff’s office is Missouri’s only agency to be nationally accredited in both enforcement and corrections. Sheriff Carey has also committed full-time school resource officers to those county school districts with no municipal law enforcement agencies. Sheriff Carey also helped to create the Boone County Sheriff’s office Cyber Crimes task force.

Former deputy Blair also ran unsuccessfully against Carey in 2020. Charlie Blair spoke recently to 939 the Eagle’s Mike Murphy on the “Columbia Buzz” program, saying Sheriff Carey “has forgotten he works for the citizens.” However, his message did not resonate with voters.

Blair resigned from the department after his 2020 defeat.
