The city of Sturgeon says one of its police officers “acted within his authority” Sunday when he shot and killed a dog that appeared to be “injured, sick and abandoned.” Turns out the 13-pound shih tzu mix was blind in one eye, deaf and someone’s pet. In a Facebook post, city officials said they reviewed the officer’s body-camera footage. They believe the officer acted with the information available to him at the time to protect against possible injury to citizens. A petition to have the officer fired now has more than 1,700 signatures. City officials said they will be sending all officers to Boone County animal control for training and education “in hopes that this unfortunate situation does not occur again.”
