A groundbreaking ceremony is set for Thursday afternoon for a $14-million affordable housing project in Columbia.
The Columbia Housing Authority (CHA) will host today’s 3:30 groundbreaking ceremony for its Kinney Point apartment project near Sexton and Garth, across from the authority’s Oak Towers complex.
939 the Eagle’s Mike Murphy reports the $14-million development is the largest expansion of government-subsidized housing in Columbia since Paquin tower was built in 1978. Murphy reports Kinney Point will include 34 units of high-quality affordable housing with supportive services.
The CHA was established by city ordinance in 1956, aimed at serving Columbia and Boone County’s most vulnerable citizens with housing and supportive services. The Columbia Housing Authority’s website says CHA currently serves more than 2,000 households and about 4,000 individuals with affordable housing and services.
CHA chief executive officer Randy Cole told 939 the Eagle’s Fred Parry in late April that the housing authority owns and maintains about 750 units.
