Missouri’s House Speaker praises former Mizzou basketball coach Norm Stewart’s induction into the Hall of Famous Missourians.

House Speaker Dean Plocher (R-Des Peres) says Coach Stewart’s legacy shines bright, praising his resilience and excellence. Norman Eugene Stewart, who’s 89, is from northeast Missouri’s Shelbyville. He coached Missouri from 1967-1999, winning 734 games, eight Big Eight regular season titles and six conference tournament championships. Coach Stewart was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1989 and founded Coaches vs. Cancer, which has raised millions of dollars to support cancer research and assistance for those battling the disease.

Many of Stewart’s former players made the trip to Jefferson City for Wednesday’s ceremony, including Derrick Chievous and Gary Leonard.
